Philippine Trip 2014
Alex and Eunice Malanday of Guimaras Island, Philippines founders of Church Builders Ministry were Jacob's Gifts first recipients for kinder schools. We had desired to visit Alex and Eunice and started planning a trip four years ago. The key word here is WE. We had decided when, who, how long and where exactly we were going. The first time trying to get things all in order it was a scheduling nightmare to meet everyone’s requirements and the airfare prices continued going higher. So that trip never came about. One year later we tried planning another trip, this time everything seemed to be in place with some challenges, but we were within three weeks of leaving when we made a trip to the hospital on a Sunday morning. Found that Richard had a blood clot in his leg and later they discovered blood clots in his lungs, so many they could not count and by God’s grace Richard survived what some do not. Once again the trip was cancelled as we saw it. A few months later Oliver Asher who was leading the trip with us came to visit. Sitting in our living room visiting about what all had happened, trying to make sense of it all, he asked us what is next? We came to the conclusion we should Pray and Wait for God’s leading. After two years of praying and waiting an opportunity came to us that only God could make happen. Close friends of ours Ron and Carla Thompson were going to the Philippines to be part of the Tool Shed Ministry and Medical Mission Trip. At first the team was in place but there became two openings on the team, Mike Twitchell from ANM asked Ron and Carla if they would approach us about being a part of the team. We prayed and met with our children Josh and Katlynn before saying yes, at that time our son Josh shared with us some things that could only be from the Lord that confirmed we were to be a part of this trip. At that moment we knew that this was God’s TIME for us to go. We were in a serving position on this trip, not a leadership role. When we arrived at Camp LeJoy we were amazed at how God was uniting all of the different people on the team and in the camp to work together for His Glory. But as Carla would say “Duh” why should we be amazed??? Once again it is God’s plan and time not ours. To stand in awe and watch how God led this team to share the Gospel and use their talents to teach and encourage the people. Throughout the whole trip God was continually directing the people on the team to grow spiritually and show God’s love and compassion in serving those in need, from the devotions held and counseling to the medical mission that seen people for two days, and teaching of computer skills, sewing, puppetry, welding and carpentry. The time spent here with Bong and her team at Camp LeJoy doing other mission work such as sharing at a High School, a jail, a prison, and being a part of a Day Camp at Roger and Sylvia’s prepared us for the rest of our journey on this mission trip emotionally. The second part of our journey was to visit Alex and Eunice Malanday with the kinderschools that Jacob’s Gift was a part of. Part of the team arrived on Guimaras Island with us on Sunday morning. On our way to Alex’s church he took us to see the Jacob Hall Training Center , then headed onto the church service where Ron Miller of ANM shared what God had laid on his heart. He asked the question “Where are you supposed to be?” Then his answer was “ At the feet of Jesus”. We were blessed to have Chris Parillo and her sister Doctor Linda Balugo and two other Doctors with us on this part of our journey. Little did they know that Richard would need them that afternoon, he had gotten something in his eye and the docs advice was if we hadn’t been able to get it out we needed to go to the hospital where they would have the right equipment. We were able to go to a hospital that had an ophthalmologist to remove the piece of steel out of his eye, taking only minutes and no charge. Again the Lord was mapping out our journey, we had docs with us to help guide us on what to do, where to go and to advocate for us in this time of uncertainty along with Carla and LJ, Alex and Eunice’s son. We returned to the church where some of the team was already sharing and we joined trying to encourage the church members of their importance of being a missionary in their own community. That evening the Malandays and our team were able to rest and relax at a beautiful resort while getting to visit with each other, that next morning we hit the road early to see the kinder schools. We were blessed with the enthusiasm of the children and teachers, by singing us songs at each of the schools. Seeing the children at the schools made us wonder where the kids are today that had attended in the last fourteen years and what are they doing with their lives. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Thru raising Jacob in the ways of the Lord, he had wrote a poem stating that he wanted to become a missionary, now we have been allowed to be part of that journey by going to the Philippines and seeing God’s Plan in action. Pastor Daniel that was with us shared “The Journey is part of the Gift”. When God is tugging at your heart to be part of a missions trip on his time and agenda you will be stretched and blessed as to nothing that you have ever experienced in your lifetime. Not to mention how he will use you to bless, serve, encourage, love and build relationships with the people you are going to meet on the journey.
